First get a pistol and the skill to use it. you can do this at level 1 at your trainer.
If you are off balance your defense is weak so you will get hit, and your attacks will fail, so you MUST get your balance higher than your opponents, you do that with preparatory attacks.
When you are balanced you will dodge parry or block most attacks.
You and your enemy's balance is indicated by the colour of your respective target rings around your feet.
Prepare and prepare until you can attack, if you have enough initiative use your finishing move - this will unbalance you a little. Rinse and repeat till your opponent is dead.

You need 1 preparatory Attack 1 basic attack and 1 finishing move

to get off to a good start.
Boardin Advice
Reduce the crew with grape or canister shot before boarding.
Take out the leader: try to target the enemy leader "captain" before moving to close and initiating combat
When you have him/her targeted
1. Get in pistol range and shoot
2. Build up some initiative
3. Command you allies to attack him, this will knock him off balance.
4. Prepare and prepare until you can attack.
5. Call in reinforcements when down to 2 men.
6. When He's dead run to his respawn point.
Fighting players can be much harder than NPC's but the same basic rules apply prepare and prepare until you can attack.
