PotBS Review by Captain Jones

From the Yucatan Pirate Gang

Introduction

irates of the Burning Sea is a full blown mmorp set in 1720 you and your chosen nation battle for control of the Caribbean.

You can sail around in your ship get out at a port run around pick up quests (missions) do emotes chat etc.

Use your ship to attack other ships, get sunk, lose you ship forever, board or be boarded, sword fight, (swashbuckling) do economy stuff: auction houses in each port with different prices. You can even create unrest at an enemy port so a full pvp area forms around it and even take over a port (takes some organizing).

Excitement:

Losing your ship can be compared to losing Weapons and Armor in your usual mmo, which makes it very exciting indeed especially as pvp areas can appear around ports as soon as players build up enough unrest in said port.

When you lose your ship and all its cargo you appear back at port where you have a spare ship, its enough of a shock to give you that dread feeling in your chest, if it was pvp you will feel the hatred grow in your belly

That by its self is enough to give the game a try but there is more:

End Game:

Click for Larger image Most mmo's suffer from a lack of "end game" in my opinion, developers struggle to keep the big guilds entertained with new dungeons, new loot to collect more levels to attain and the gap between the newbie and the "uber" gets wider.

Clearly Flying Labs LCC have thought about this and come up with an ingenious solution: The end game in potbs is inextricably linked to the economy, if the port where you have your raw material collecting or manufacturing falls into contention that effects your ability to wage war, it effects your Nations ability to wage war, prices in the auction house skyrocket. And it's the economy that puts ports into contention in the first place by shipping in undesirable goods mostly rum and small arms.

When enough unrest is created a large red pvp area forms in the seas around the port if the attacking nation builds up enough unrest 24 players who have helped attack or defend are chosen to enter a large instance battle for control of the port.

The economy:

You don't craft as such in potbs you form part of the supply chain, you can with difficulty make a ship on your own but it's really not worth it.

Instead you might grow hemp and weave it in to sails or mine iron and make cannon balls which you sell in the auction house or supply to your guild (called society in potbs).

You will have to ship it there in a big slow vulnerable ship which can be "exciting", you may need friends to escort you.

Combat:

Click for Larger image There is ship combat and there is swashbuckling, if you attack or are attacked in your ship you load into a big instance of the sea others in your group can join if they're close and members of your nation if you send up a flare. The fight is extremely tactical wind, cannon ammo, position, ship types and number all play apart. it is far more tactical than a typical raid in another mmo. I would say it compares to a highly tactical raid in slow motion, great fun! And exciting see excitement above.

When you have your opponent beat usually taking sails out and reducing crew you can carry on and sink it or you can board it. When you board a ship you and your boarding party (NPCs) are in an instance of the ship with your opponent and his crew, and you all sword fight (swashbuckling) This is not claymore on shield its Errol Flynn swish swish backing up the stairs fighting its good fun.

Summary

Click for Larger image In Pirates of the Burning Sea I've had my heart beating fast in a bit of a panic which hasn't happened since Everquest 1 when someone shouted "warewolf" West Karana 1999.

I've had to take my headset off because I was laughing so much: not happened since Anarchy Online beta many moons ago. So my advice is buy the game.
